TOBI LEKAN
Tobi Lekan is the newest R&B artist on the scene. Tobi is an 18 year old actor from Kent, but has recently switched it up and decided to drop his EP 'COLOURS 2', featuring his hit singles 'Low Battery' and 'Juicy'.
He released his EP on April 4th 2020, just one day after Drake released 'Toosie Slide', and Tobi overtook it in the charts within four hours - as well as over taking Halsey, Khalid and The Weekend!
We asked Tobi to do an exclusive interview with us as we have so many questions, plus we LOVE his new hits!
What caused you to make such a sudden change in career choice?
"I've loved music since I was younger, my mum always had music playing in the house and by the time I was 5 I knew how to play the piano, guitar and the drums. I started writing lyrics and melodies when I was 12. One day I was just sat going through my lines of a character who wanted to pursue a career in music; and it hit me that that was what I wanted to do."
Who inspired you the most when writing your EP?
"My biggest inspirations behind all of my writing and music have been Tupac, Whitney Houston and Prince. When I was a little kid; me, my mum and my dad spent the weekends listening to Prince and dancing around the kitchen- I have my parents to thank for my taste in music."
We heard about a potential feature on Drakes upcoming album, has anyone else reached out to collab?
"Yeah I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say on that subject but Drake has reached out a few times to talk about the album, also The Weeknd mentioned a little something about opening for him on his 2021 UK tour which is really exciting."
Speaking of touring, would you ever like to do a headline tour of your own?
"Maybe, not yet though. I'd like to get a couple of full albums out first. However I'd like to do a few festivals, maybe Reading or Wireless."
How are you finding your new found fame?
"It's funny really, I made this EP not expecting much from it and then I woke up one day and had an extra 20k followers on Instagram and Twitter; it was crazy. It has been really surreal but also really exciting."
